American Elm

Ulmus americana

American elm on the Montgomery County Courthouse grounds

The American elm is an increasingly rare city tree as many have been lost to disease, however Red Oak has some especially grand examples of the species. There is an American elm standing on the ground of the Montgomery County Courthouse, near the southeast corner.

American elms are most easily distinguished by their characteristic vase-like shape. They are on the list of prohibited varieties for street trees in Red Oak.
