Basswood trees, also called linden trees, are common in Red Oak. They are usually medium-sized trees but can grow quite large. Until 2012, several basswoods stood near the corners of Fountain Square. They were removed and replaced with concrete planters.

Basswoods can be identified by their large, heart-shaped leaves that are finely-toothed and uneven at the base. Seeds are attached to large leafy wings, which are another distinguishing characteristic of the basswood tree. These wings are pale green, turning light brown.
Basswood leaves are heart-shaped. Pale leafy wings act as parachutes for seeds.
