Cottonwood trees are native and can grow very large. They get their name from the cottony seeds they release. Cottonwood leaves are large and partly heart-shaped, with wavy edges that come to a distinct point.

Cottonwoods are on the list of prohibited varieties for street trees in Red Oak.
