Hackberry

Celtis occidentalis

Hackberry tree in College Park
Hackberry trees have leaves that are sharply toothed and have an uneven base. They produce small, round green fruits called "drupes" that turn dark purple or black. The drupes often remain on the tree over winter. The branches of Hackberry trees often have a crooked, zig-zag shape.

The trees are drought tolerant and do well in cities, making them a commonly planted street tree.
